Charge to PanelEach panelist will be invited to address the first two points (and more if they’d like):
  • Describe your experience or involvement in cross-cultural collaborations or projects.
  • What experience-based advice can you give the audience for new or existing cross-cultural collaborations to strengthen the activities? What are the challenges and opportunities?
  • Bonus 1: What is your favorite Gandalf quote (and how it applies to their experience)?
  • Bonus 2: Are there similar icons as Gandalf in your culture (literatures/tales/etc.)? Today?

From Research to Revitalization: Advancements in Speech AI and LLMs for Taiwan's National Languages, Their Future Applications, and Potential Collaborations
Monday February 24, 2025 09:15 - 10:00 CST
This keynote provides a comprehensive overview of our work in advancing speech AI and large language models tailored for Taiwan's national languages. We chronicle our journey—from initial data collection and model training to the successful deployment of real-world applications—while examining both our methodologies and the challenges that persist. Looking ahead, the presentation highlights promising future directions for collaboration, including initiatives for endangered language revitalization, the evolution of AI-assisted language learning, and the integration of robotics to enable interactive applications. These efforts are complemented by broader cross-disciplinary partnerships, all aimed at preserving and celebrating not only Taiwan's unique linguistic heritage but also the broader spectrum of humanity's rich linguistic and cultural legacy.

Panel: The Era of Impact-based Collaborative Research
Monday February 24, 2025 17:00 - 18:15 CST
There is a growing global awareness of the impact that could be created by cross-fertilizing applied research projects likely to have large potential community impacts. Instead of research groups competing to be the first to publish a scientific or technical innovation, a collaborative wholistic approach is designed to bring multiple synergistic intelligences to bear on real-life difficult problems. The success of this process is not guaranteed, but apears to be enhanced when scientists, practitioners, and beneficiaries involved have varied backrounds, assumptions, and areas of expertise. This type of process is being encouraged in the United States by the National Science Foundation's new Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships Directorate, and is having impacts throughout the other NSF directorates. International collaborations should, by this reasoning, be especially beneficial because additional viewpoints are encouraged by varying languague, culture, training, expectation, and experience. Some nascent positive directions include (a) formal, supported participation by potential beneficiaries; (b) place-based collaborative innovation with community commitment; (c) early identification and focus on the most intractable portions of the task; (d) a willingness to pursue and adopt multiple potential solutions simultaneously; and (e) a strong and evolving sense of priority, urgency, and collaboration. It seems highly unlikely that the US NSF has a monopoly on this shift to more collaborative and applied research on pressing societal issues. What can CENTRA members contribute to this vitalily important international discussion?

Conversational AI for Cultural Knowledge Discovery: Development and Implementation of TAIHUCAIS in Taiwan’s Humanities Research
Tuesday February 25, 2025 10:00 - 10:45 CST
The rapid development of large language models (LLMs) has introduced unprecedented possibilities in the field of humanities research. In Taiwan, the TAIwan HUmanities Conversational AI Knowledge Discovery System (TAIHUCAIS) integrates unique Taiwanese data with advanced AI technologies to address challenges related to fragmented data management and complex query requirements in humanities research. Grounded in user experience research, the system offers an intuitive conversational platform that streamlines the knowledge discovery process to meet the needs of humanities scholars. This presentation will share the development journey of TAIHUCAIS, including real-world application outcomes, and explore challenges encountered while integrating Taiwanese humanities data, such as difficulties in obtaining data authorization and issues of LLMs bias. Additionally, it will explore how these experiences can inspire research endeavors in other cultural and linguistic contexts, paving the way for future collaborations between LLMs and IT, and further promoting innovation and international connectivity.
